Our Philosophy
Memo_er has a simple philosophy, the Memoerian Creed, if you will (you shouldn't):
I use Memo_er because...
I prefer Tables to Graphs. Give me the bottom-line. Don't make me try to figure out the scale. Don't make me fight my animal brain's desire to spot patterns where none exists. Give me the numbers. Specify clearly and explicitly what parameter I should care about to make a decision and calculate that parameter.
I prefer Analyses to Queries. Analyses synthesize data into decision-relevant parameters. Queries fetch data and show it to us — often, in a graph. Popular dashboarding tools are query machines. They can be hacked around to make them work for doing analyses, but a better solution is to use a tool designed for the job (and one that doesn't cost $75/month per user).
I prefer Memos to Dashboards. Can you imagine asking a data scientist to do an analysis for you, and they just send you back a couple graphs? Would never happen. They would send you a memo that explains their assumptions and their analysis. Self-service data analysis should be just like data analysis. All that is different about the self-service problem is that it de-couples who makes the assumptions from who does the analysis. Dashboards prioritize visualization. Memos prioritize analysis and conclusions. I prefer the latter.
